Whitewater

Whitewater is formed in a rapid, when a river's gradient drops enough to disturb its laminar flow and create turbulence, e.g. form a bubbly, or aerated and unstable current; the frothy water appears white. The term is also used loosely to refer to less-turbulent but still agitated flows.
The term "whitewater" also has a broader meaning, applying to any river or creek itself that has a significant number of rapids. The term is also used as an adjective describing boating on such rivers, such as whitewater kayaking.

River Clean Up

Whitewater River Cleanups
One of the best ways for paddlers to show our commitment to protecting the rivers we paddle is to organize and participate in stream cleanups. American Whitewater is proud to participate in the National River Cleanup Week® and we encourage our members and affiliate clubs to organize cleanups in association with this great program.

What is a river cleanup? River cleanups come in all shapes and sizes. A river cleanup is simply a group of river enthusiasts getting together to remove litter from the bed and banks of a section of river or stream. This can be as simple as a group of three or four paddlers cleaning up the put-in and take out of their favorite river, and/or picking up trash that they see while paddling or hiking the run. Cleanups can be as complex as whole communities rallying to clean up long sections of urban river corridors. It is up to you to decide how big to go.

River cleanups do several great things for rivers:

They remove trash that can harm wildlife and water quality.
They improve the scenic value of rivers for all recreational visitors.
They strengthen the local community of river enthusiasts.
Clean rivers are inspirational and encourage stewardship from the general public as opposed to trashed rivers which are perceived as having little value.
Press from river cleanups, and local participation, may reduce littering behavior.
Press from river cleanups improves the public perception of the paddling community and helps us more effectively participate in other environmental issues.

New River Clean Up 2007

  • The rest of our crew.
This year a small but effective group of river folk set out to make a difference, or at least to make a dent. Possibilly, just to make ourselves feel better about using and abusing the river all year with out sparing time to try and make it better. Maybe we just did it to spend the day doing what we like to do best.

Gauley Guide Training

Twas the night before Gauley season and all 'round the creek, every river guide was gathered, every vidiot, every freak.

August Gauley Augmentation

  • Low water conditions in southern West Virginia sometimes means the Gauley river is running higher than usual. The combined waters of the New and the Gauley rivers meet to form the Kanawha river which is used to transport coal by way of barge. When the there is not enough water the Army Corp of Engineers augments the flow of the Kanawha by letting water out of the Summersville Dam into the Gauley river bed. Providing paddlers with enough juice to raft the upper Gauley!

It`s not just the rivers that make West Virginia special. The people you meet when you visit the Mountain State are fun, friendly and always eager to run a river trip.
